If you’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing life in New Jersey, you’re undoubtedly familiar with its iconic diners that hold a special place in its culture. One such establishment, The Broadway Diner, served as a backdrop for numerous significant moments in my life and acted as the inspiration behind BreakTime’s EP, “Specials.” The title font, borrowed from the diner’s daily specials menu, and the EP’s composition styles resembling those of a diner’s eclectic menu, offer a unique blend of surf rock, power pop, and merseybeat that define the unmistakable BreakTime sound.

Embracing the Sounds of Summer

Released on August 25, 2023, “Specials” is a culmination of BreakTime’s exploration into various musical genres. The EP features a collection of lead double-singles, each showcasing their musical versatility. From the sun-soaked vibes of surf rock to the melodic charm of power pop, and the rhythmic nostalgia of merseybeat, BreakTime seamlessly blends these elements into a captivating musical experience.

A Nod to Diner Culture

The EP’s title, “Specials,” pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of New Jersey diners. Just as a diner’s specials menu offers a diverse range of delectable choices, BreakTime’s EP presents a seasonal assortment of musical flavours. Sean Manuel, the head songwriter, found inspiration in his neighbourhood diner, The Broadway Diner, where he shared countless memorable moments with friends and family. This connection adds an intimate and personal touch to the EP’s thematic journey.

A Sonic Palette of Creativity

“Specials” doesn’t shy away from experimentation. The EP introduces innovative textures and techniques, such as the captivating sample of a car engine revving in the Beach Boys-inspired track “Motor City Mama.” With the Byrds-like song “Love And Harmony,” thick harmonies elevate the ethereal solo section. The Motown-esque “You Don’t See Me” showcases intricate rhythm changes, while “Octane” introduces a slightly-psychedelic surf rock instrumental led by rhythm guitarist Douglas Lupo. The EP concludes with a lively call-and-response vocal harmony in “She’s The One,” reminiscent of the Beatles’ signature style.

A Forward Leap in Production Quality

“Specials” represents a substantial step forward in production quality compared to BreakTime’s previous work. The EP expands on the core elements that define the band’s signature sound—jangly guitars, walking basslines, harmonies that warm the soul, and timeless songwriting. The result is an audio experience that captures the essence of their growth and musical evolution.

The Essence of BreakTime

Imagine the harmonic brilliance of The Beatles and The Beach Boys, infused with the spirit of the Hudson River and modern pop sensibilities. This is precisely what BreakTime offers. Their music is a celebration of upbeat, optimistic pop rock, steeped in vintage influences. From their studio to your ears, BreakTime invites you to join their sonic journey and experience the joy of music that transcends time.

“Specials” is more than just an EP; it’s a musical testament to the band’s growth, creativity, and passion for their craft. With a fusion of nostalgic nods and contemporary ingenuity, BreakTime’s latest offering promises a musical journey that resonates with both devoted fans and newcomers alike.
