If you think you’ve heard it all when it comes to music, think again! United Kingdom’s Oxford-based artist, SHAVEN PRIMATES, has just unleashed their mind-bending album titled “Birds Aren’t Real,” and it’s an absolute rollercoaster of dark-wave, art-rock, and post-punk goodness. Released on the 28th of July 2023, this 5-piece band has taken the music scene by storm with their unique blend of influences and their unapologetic mission to push the boundaries of their genre.

The album is a journey through the band’s introspective take on the world, diving into themes of war, propaganda, lies, hate, and conspiracy. Alongside these weighty subjects, SHAVEN PRIMATES don’t shy away from addressing personal struggles like the suicide of someone close and growing up with a mind that feels out of place in society.

Let’s delve into some of the standout tracks on this mind-bending musical adventure:

“Fade Away” draws inspiration from contemporary social media and the rise of fascism. Combining elements of punk and post-punk, the song delivers an emotional punch that reflects the pressures of the modern age.

“A Decision” takes a dark turn as it addresses the impact of a tragic suicide. The gothic sound and symphonic layers enhance the weight of the topic, creating a deeply haunting experience.

“Silicon Implants” is a whirlwind of observations, touching on current events and historical comparisons. With bluesy beats, Homesick Blues-like vocals, and thought-provoking lyrics, the band leaves no stone unturned.

“Unmasked” weaves together two stories: one of an undiagnosed autistic child enduring school and another of a diagnosed autistic child finding self-acceptance. The delicate verses and elevating choruses reflect the journey of self-discovery.

And then we have the title track, “Birds Aren’t Real,” which takes us on an alternative-truth-filled adventure. Combining Spanish influences and a punk throwback in the chorus, this song is as quirky as its name suggests.

Overall, “Birds Aren’t Real” is an emotionally charged, thought-provoking album that will challenge your perceptions and ignite your imagination. SHAVEN PRIMATES’ fusion of influences, relentless passion, and fearless storytelling sets them apart as a force to be reckoned with in the music world.
